Year 5 Residential Day One

After finishing our game of Tetris with the luggage (thank you, Mr. Osborne!), Year 5 were finally on their way to Newby Wiske – the anticipation was high! Excitement buzzed through the air as we embarked on a journey that would challenge us, inspire us, and teach us the true meaning of determination.
Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by our group leaders, Aaron and Charlie, before gathering at the Hive to refuel and prepare for an action-packed afternoon. The children knew they were in for an adventure, but little did they realise just how much they would push themselves beyond their comfort zones.
The first challenge? Climbing. Towering 15 metres above the ground, the climbing wall tested their bravery, resilience, and self-belief. Some hesitated at first, looking up at the daunting height, but with encouragement from their friends and a deep breath of courage, they took the first step. Despite the hail and rain, our incredible Year 5 pupils persevered, gripping each hold with determination and smiling through the challenge. Their sense of accomplishment at the top was truly inspiring!
In the woodland, the children put their teamwork skills to the test in an epic game of laser tag. Camouflaged amongst the trees, they demonstrated tactical thinking, resilience, and quick decision-making. The excitement was palpable as they worked together, dashing between cover, strategising their moves, and celebrating every hard-earned victory.
Next came the ultimate test of trust and courage—the leap of faith. Standing on the platform, nerves ran high, but with deep determination, each child took a breath and leapt forward, conquering their fears in a single bound. The cheers from their friends below made every moment worthwhile, reinforcing the lesson that perseverance always leads to success.
By dinnertime, our adventurers had truly earned their feast. With a delicious selection of pasta, curry, and cottage pie on offer, plus jelly for dessert, the energy levels were restored. In fact, legend has it that we cleared out the salad bar in record time!
The evening was filled with PGL games, laughter, and a visit to the gift shop before exhaustion finally caught up with us. As we settled into our NASA-inspired beds (very fitting for our out-of-this-world adventures!), we reflected on the day’s triumphs and looked forward to the challenges that awaited us tomorrow.
This journey is more than just a residential; it’s an experience that builds confidence, resilience, and lifelong friendships. We can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
Night all, Year 5 xx
