Peat Rigg 2024 Blog Day One

The coach ride was full of the usual excitement and anticipation of a well-deserved Year 6 residential. Setting off in sunshine, the rain came in as we arrived, but this did not dampen our spirits. We were here, ready for action.

On arrival we got our belongings and met Ian (one of the Peat Rigg managers) who talked us through the safety and what to expect of our time here. After what felt like hours of talk (it was only a few minutes) we finally found out the moment we had been waiting for- who was in our rooms! The downside of this, we had to make our beds- a shock to the system for lots.

After some interesting attempts at bed-making, including duvet covers on pillowcases, and some top tips from some of the teachers, we’d finally finished the first challenge- onto the next.

After a wonderful lunch consisting of a variety of sandwiches, savoury snacks and a lot of salad, we then were told which groups we were in and sent to meet our instructors. After another safety briefing it was time for a first activity- different for each group and included:  zip wire, Jacob’s ladder, bushcraft and caving. All very different, but all received with jubilation and the whole of Year 6 have impressed us with their teamwork, support and listening skills.

It was time for some much needed fuel- a choice of bolognese or mac ‘n’ cheese- yum! It was then followed by cake and whipped cream.

After re-fuelling, it was then time for our final activity of the day. This was all about team-work and map reading: orienteering! The teams worked extremely well together, however, some of us found orientating a map a little tricky- thank goodness for sat-navs!

Orienteering finished,  into our PJs, it was time for supper. A lovely warm hot chocolate was gulped down with a delicious biscuit, we were ready to go to our dorms to sleep… well most of us.

Stay tuned for some more updates on some tired children (and teachers) on some brand new activities- water incoming…
